The Esztergom Castle Hill

The main landmark of Esztergom, the first Hungarian capital founded in 973, inhabited by kings, is the hill, now about fifty metres high, with the Basilica and the Royal Castle on it.

From the Castle Hill overlooking Esztergom, looking towards the four cardinal points, you can see a magnificent panorama of the peaks of Visegrad and the more distant mountain ranges marked by the Iron Gate.

The Danube meandering below, the upper part of the Danube Bend, the Maria Valeria Bridge over the river, Párkány and its surroundings in the Highlands opposite Esztergom, the mouth of the Garam River in Slovakia and, of course, Esztergom with its population of almost 30,000, as well as other nearby settlements.
