Esztergom
The Esztergom Basilica, consecrated in 1856, is the largest church building in Hungary, with a height of 100 metres, and is one of the five largest churches in Europe. The sub-church of the main cathedral on Várhegy contains the tombs of the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church, including that of Prince Primate József Mindszenty.

The main landmark of Esztergom, the first Hungarian capital founded in 973, inhabited by kings, is the hill, now about fifty metres high, with the Basilica and the Royal Castle on it.

The Dark Gate of Esztergom is a gateway under the huge artificial slope of Castle Hill, built in front of the basilica. Its length is about 90 metres. The tunnel follows the line of the former battlements in front of the eastern castle wall.
