Watertown (Víziváros)

Esztergom's next attraction, after the Castle Hill, is the neighbouring Water Town. Here you can find several museums and historical buildings of international and national importance.

The district, which includes Péter Pázmány Street, Katona József Street, József Mindszenty Square and Zsigmond Berényi Street, is home to the largest collection of documents, papers and books of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary, the Bibliotheca, renovated in 2018, which contains unique codices and books related to important events in Hungarian history, rulers and ecclesiastical dignitaries.

One of the main recreational areas of the Water Town (and Esztergom), the Elisabeth Park, is also located here, next to the Primate's Palace, on the banks of the Great Danube. A special attraction of the Water Town is the Cat Staircase, which in the season leads tourists up a steep flight of steps and a short walk to the inner part of the almost 50-metre-high Castle Hill, in the immediate vicinity of the Basilica.
